Policies

Do you offer refunds?
No, we do not offer refunds. We generally have to turn students away due to capacity and those registered are expected to fulfill our minimum commitment requirement of one full semester or one week during the summer.

What if my child misses a class?
As a courtesy, please let us know in advance if your child is unable to make a day. If your child needs to miss a class for any reason, the class is non-refundable.

What is the minimum commitment required?
The minimum commitment required for after school is one full semester. For summer workshops we require a full week commitment.

What if my child’s behavior is repeatedly disruptive to other students during class?
We will firstly approach the student’s parents with our concerns. In the extreme case that a student is radically disrupting the class learning environment, we reserve the right to remove students at any time from our program without offering a refund.

My child signed up with a friend. Can they chat the whole time?
No. While there is plenty of time to chat during snack time, when we move to the tables for our project work, we will separate students that are being too chatty. Table work is lesson time, and it’s important that all discussions are centered around our main topic so that deep learning can flourish.

Can my child bring a toy or a fidget from home?
No. We ask that our students do not bring toys from home as it excludes others and can be distracting.

Are slang words, bad words, disrespectful behavior allowed?
Absolutely not. We hold manners in high esteem. We do not allow phrases such as “What the…”, “Darn”, or any potty words. We encourage intelligent conversation at all times.

What are your expectations for older kids?
As our students get older, we expect their analytic capacities to sharpen and deepen. Students will be exposed to art criticism, philosophy, and literature and are expected to articulate their thoughts regarding various subject matters. In terms of behavior, we are strict with language, we do not allow cell-phone usage in the studio, and when the weather is warm we follow DOE dress code (no belly shirts or very short shorts).

What if I do not pick up my child’s art project on the last day?
All art projects need to be picked up on the last day of the semester or summer week. We do not store art projects. Any project not picked up on the last day will be either taken apart and used as materials or given to the community as free art.

FAQs

What does a typical after-school class look like?
The structure varies with the different age groups, but overall, kids should expect a note-taking session, guided drawing lessons, intellectual content and conversation, and project-based learning.

What is a Goose Grease Smock?
It’s our uniform! We encourage all students to wear our custom blue smocks over their clothes to help protect themselves from paint, glue, and whatever else we get up to in the studio. Students are expected to carry them to be ready for class.

Will my child really learn history while making art?
Yes! Our primary goal is to design a curriculum where crafts and educational content go hand in hand to facilitate the student’s remembrance of crucial topics in history.

How do you teach history?
We do this through conversation, creative note-taking, and making associations between past and present lessons. Our project-based art making is designed to help kids remember what they are learning about.

How many semesters should we sign up for?
If you want to see true progress, commit to sending your child to GG at least one day a week for all of their elementary years. If you do this, we guarantee you will see the difference.

Is Goose Grease a good fit for my child?
In terms of skill level, kids should be able to rip masking tape on their own. This is usually a good marker for us, indicating that their fine motor skills are ready for our level of project making. In terms of behavior, kids should be able to sit at a table working on a project for 45 minutes to an hour. Before committing, please read this “About Us” page, as well as our “Policies” page. You can also browse our Instagram page @goosegreasehouse to see the kind of projects we make. We appreciate when families are committed and in it for the long haul! This is when we see true progress being made.
