House Policies

  • Do you offer refunds?

No, we do not offer refunds. We generally have to turn students away due to capacity and those registered are expected to fulfill our minimum commitment requirement of one full semester or one week during the summer.

  • What if my child misses a class?

As a courtesy, please let us know in advance if your child is unable to make a day. If your child needs to miss a class for any reason, the class is non-refundable.

  • What is the minimum commitment required?

The minimum commitment required for afterschool is one full semester. For summer workshops we require a full week commitment.

  • What if my child’s behavior is repeatedly disruptive to other students during class?

We will firstly approach the student’s parents with our concerns. In the extreme case that a student is radically disrupting the class learning environment, we reserve the right to remove students at any time from our program without offering a refund.

  • Can my child do whatever they want at the studio?

No. We have a very structured curriculum to which we follow throughout the afternoon and during our summer workshops. While we do offer some time for free-building at the beginning and end of sessions, our classes are academically rigorous and students are expected to follow step-by-step instructions in their art making and note-taking. We expect students to raise hands during discussions, and maintain a quiet and focused classroom decorum.

  • My child signed up with a friend. Can they chat the whole time?

No. While there is plenty of time to chat during snack time, when we move to the tables for our project work, we will separate students that are being too chatty. Table work is lesson time, and it’s important that all discussions are centered around our main topic so that deep learning can flourish.

  • Can my child bring a toy or a fidget from home?

No. We ask that our students do not bring toys from home as it excludes others and can be distracting.

  • Are slang words, bad words, disrespectful behavior allowed?

Absolutely not. We hold manners in high esteem. We do not allow phrases such as “What the…”, “Darn”, or any potty words. We encourage intelligent conversation at all times.

  • What are your expectations for older kids?

As our students get older, we expect their analytic capacities to sharpen and deepen. Students will be exposed to art criticism, philosophy, and literature and are expected to articulate their thoughts regarding various subject matters. In terms of behavior, we are strict with language, we do not allow cell-phone usage in the studio, and when the weather is warm we follow DOE dress code (no belly shirts or very short shorts).

  • What if I do not pick up my child’s art project on the last day?

All art projects need to be picked up on the last day of the semester or summer week. We do not store art projects. Any project not picked up on the last day will be either taken apart and used as materials or given to the community as free art.
